Reedbeds and shallow water at Catral's El Hondo nature classroom opening onto the cultivated Vega Baja plain

Catral

A low huerta municipality irrigated by the Acequia Mayor, with a medieval documentary record and a nature classroom at the protected edge of El Hondo.

Huerta at the wetland edge

A town organised by shared water

Catral's municipal land is almost entirely flat. The Acequia Mayor and smaller channels cross a wide huerta before drainage water reaches the El Hondo system, placing cultivation and wetland ecology side by side.

The town appears in a thirteenth-century document as a settlement of Orihuela and later became a villa. Its present nature classroom makes the meeting between agriculture, saladar vegetation and protected bird habitat visible at field level.
